Disasters invariably affect both humans and their animal companions, yet the available literature examining women’s participation in companion animal welfare efforts during emergency situations is surprisingly limited. The COVID-19 crisis’s public health protocols generated varied difficulties in accessing veterinary care, thereby providing a context to examine the nuanced aspects of gendered roles concerning animal health and well-being during the initial emergency response period. This project undertakes a qualitative investigation, employing semi-structured interviews, to examine the roles, responsibilities, and experiences of twelve people, eleven identifying as women, caring for animal companions needing veterinary treatment during the COVID-19 response in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The COVID-19 crisis highlighted three significant animal welfare roles taken on by women companion animal guardians (WCAGs): 1) physical caretakers of companion animals, reaching from immediate family units to broader communities; 2) providers of mental support to companion animals, through human-animal connections within households, communities, and veterinary facilities; and 3) advocates for companion animal well-being holistically, using approaches at individual family, community, and societal levels. Characterizing gender-specific contributions to animal welfare in emergency situations pinpoints knowledge deficiencies, granting WCAGs and animal welfare entities—public, private, and non-profit—data-driven strategies for improving emergency response preparations. Our investigation also encompasses the role and potential of mobile haptics and touchscreens in these contexts, as well as our capacity—drawing from embodied and material metaphors—to broaden our physical influence through the mobile interface. We believe that, although the substitute for physical touch offered by mobile media may be perpetually imperfect, the simulated reality of habitual experience can meaningfully bridge the sensory gap.
