uctured single variable objective function of the distance, leads to accurate clustering results with relatively lesser converging time as compared to the state-of-the-art methods. The segmentation results, obtained through several experiments with real CT images, are encouraging. Selleckchem CPYPP The numerical values of different performance metrics obtained over the same data set confirm that the proposed algorithm performs better with respect to the state-of-the-art methods. Hence, we may consider the proposed method as a promising tool for clustering and CT image segmentation in a Computer Aided Diagnostic (CAD) system.

Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (PACC) is a rare malignancy that accounts for less than 1% of primary pancreatic neoplasms. Currently, the lack of large-scale clinical studies limits our understanding of PACC. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and prognosis of PACC.

In a retrospective analysis, 52 patients with PACC and 355 patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) who underwent surgical interventions were evaluated. Clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes were compared between the two groups.

The mean age was lower for patients with PACC than for those with PDAC (mean 50.8±10.9 versus 59.4±10.9 years; p<0.001). Except for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), tumour markers were also lower in the PACC group than the PDAC group. In regard to tumour characteristics, maximum diameters of the primary tumour [median (range) 5.0cm (1.0-18.2cm) versus 3.5cm (0.6-15.0cm); p<0.001] and hepatic metastatic lesions [6.7cm (1.5-12.6cm) versus 1.2cm (0.3-3.3cm); p<0.001] were larger in patients with PACC than patients with PDAC, but vascular invasion [23.1% (12/52) versus 35.5% (126/355); p=0.044] and perineural invasion [7.7% (4/52) versus 56.1% (199/355); p<0.001] were more common in patents with PDAC than in patients with PACC. For treatment, radical resection was performed in 57.7% of patients with PACC, which increased the 5-year survival rate to 31.8%. In regard to prognosis, the 5-year survival rate was 21.4% for PACC and 9.7% for PDAC (p<0.0001).

PACC is more indolent than PDAC, which makes early diagnosis more difficult. Although the stage may be advanced at diagnosis, the overall survival (OS) of PACC is much better than that of PDAC, and the prognosis greatly improves after radical resection.

Craving is a major contributor to drug-seeking and relapse. Although the ventral striatum (VS) is a primary neural correlate of craving, strategies aimed at manipulating VS function have not resulted in efficacious treatments. This incongruity may be because the VS does not influence craving in isolation. Instead, craving is likely mediated by communication between the VS and other neural substrates. Thus, we examined how striatal functional connectivity (FC) with key nodes of networks involved in addiction affects relief of craving, which is an important step in identifying viable treatment targets.

Twenty-four nicotine-dependent non-abstinent women completed two resting-state (rs) fMRI scans, one before and one following smoking a cigarette in the scanner, and provided craving ratings before and after smoking the cigarette. A seed-based approach was used to examine rsFC between the VS, putamen and germane craving-related brain regions; the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), the posterior cingulate cortex, and the anterior ventral insula.

Smoking a cigarette was associated with a decrease in craving. Relief of craving correlated with increases in right dlPFC- bilateral VS (r = 0.57, p = 0.003, corrected) as did increased right dlPFC-left putamen coupling (r = 0.62, p = 0.001, corrected).

Smoking-induced relief of craving is associated with enhanced rsFC between the dlPFC, a region that plays a pivotal role in decision making, and the striatum, the neural structure underlying motivated behavior. These findings are highly consistent with a burgeoning literature implicating dlPFC-striatal interactions as a neurobiological substrate of craving.

In Thailand, alcohol is consumed in social setting. The Thai government introduced a ban on alcohol sales and other measures at the beginning of COVID-19 lockdown with gradual lifts. However, drinking behaviors, behaviors of community members, and alcohol marketing activities during the ban and lifts have not been described.

We contracted a survey research firm to conduct four phone-based cross-sectional surveys between April and July 2020 (n = 6239 participants in total). Participants were recruited from all regions and Bangkok. We also summarized alcohol control measures as reported by multiple sources. We analyzed data from Waves 1 thru 4 using descriptive statistics with adjustment for sampling weight.

A total of 6239 persons participated in the 4 waves of surveys. Among survey respondents who were drinkers, half did not drink alcohol during the alcohol sale ban while one-third reported drinking less than usual in the past 30 days. Almost no participant reported drinking more than usual. During the ban (Wave 1), one-sixth of respondents noticed social drinking in their areas while less than 6 percent reported witnessing alcohol sale. Online parties were the predominant alcohol marketing activity, but became less common during Wave 3 compared to Wave 2.

Ever drinkers either abstained from alcohol or drank less than usual during the ban on alcohol sale. However, social drinking and alcohol sale persisted despite the ban.
