The postoperative VAS scores of back pain, ODI and JOA score were significantly improved comparing with the preoperative scores in two groups, but the Endo-TLIF group showed more significant improvement in the early follow-up (P < 0.05, respectively). There were no significant differences in terms of the interbody fusion rate between the two groups. Meanwhile, no serious postoperative complications were observed in the study.

Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that may reduce patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study explored the experience and knowledge of patients with CKD, with and without anemia, in China.
A quantitative online survey was administered to 500 consenting Chinese patient volunteers aged ≥18 years with self-reported CKD, with or without anemia, between August 29, and September 17, 2018. Patients with cancer were excluded. The 27-question survey explored knowledge of anemia, HRQoL, anemia management, and interactions with healthcare providers.
Of 456 evaluable patients, 148 (32.5%) reported having anemia and 262 (57.5%) did not. Knowledge of anemia and its symptoms varied, and approximately half of all patients did not know their hemoglobin level. Patients with anemia expressed an adverse impact of anemia on HRQoL, most commonly lack of energy (65.5%), sadness/depression (54.1%), and feeling ill (50.0%). SGI-110 datasheet The most frequently reported treatments among these patients were dietary advice (68.9%), iron supplements (63.5%), and oral medications (53.4%). Although 89.2% of patients with anemia trusted their healthcare providers above other information sources, only 29.0% reported seeking information from them; this was despite 92.6% reporting wanting further information and support about managing conditions like anemia.
Our findings suggest that patients with CKD, both with and without anemia, would benefit from increased awareness of anemia and more in-depth discussions with healthcare providers in order to facilitate better management of CKD and optimization of treatment plans.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicide are two major health problems, but there are still no objective methods to diagnose MDD or suicidal ideation (SI). This study was conducted to identify potential biomarkers for diagnosing MDD patients with SI.
First-episode drug-naïve MDD patients with SI and demographics-matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. First-episode drug-naïve MDD patients without SI were also included. The serum lipids, C-reactive protein (CRP), transferring (TRSF), homocysteine (HCY) and alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) in serum were detected. The univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were used to identify and validate the potential biomarkers.
The 86 HCs, 53 MDD patients with SI and 20 MDD patients without SI were included in this study. Four potential biomarkers were identified AAT, TRSF, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), and apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1). After one month treatment, the levels of AAT and APOA1 were significantly improved. The panel consisting of these potential biomarkers had an excellent diagnostic performance, yielding an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.994 and 0.990 in the training and testing set, respectively. Moreover, this panel could effectively distinguish MDD patients with SI from MDD patients without SI (AUC=0.928).
These results showed that these potential biomarkers could facilitate the development of an objective method for diagnosing MDD patients with SI, and the decreased AAT levels in MDD patients might lead to the appearance of SI by resulting in the elevated inflammation.

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) SNHG17 has been shown to participate in type 2 diabetes mellitus, while its role in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is unknown.
Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) assays were conducted to compare the differential expression of SNHG17 among 60 GDM patients and 60 healthy pregnant female controls. In addition, peripheral blood samples from 240 pregnant females were collected to evaluate the predictive value of SNHG17 for GDM patients. All females were followed-up until delivery to record the occurrence of GDM and perinatal outcomes. GDM-free curves were plotted to compare the occurrence of GDM between high- and low- SNHG17 expression groups. The diagnostic value of plasma SNHG17 for GDM was analyzed by ROC curve analysis. Moreover, the cell counting kit (CCK-8) assay was performed to evaluate the impact of SNHG17 on cell viability of INS-1, and the level of insulin secretion was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after overexpression or knockdown of SNHG17.
SNHG17 was downregulated in GDM patients compared to normal pregnant females. Low plasma expression levels of SNHG17 were closely correlated with the high incidence rate of GDM (GDM-free curve). Remarkably, plasma expression levels of SNHG17 at 4 weeks before the diagnosis of GDM (diagnosed by standard method) can be used to distinguish (ROC curve) GDM patients (diagnosed during follow-up) from normal pregnant females (GDM was not diagnosed during follow-up).
